Background of the study
Semantic shifts occur when the meanings of words or phrases evolve, often influenced by cultural and political dynamics. In Nigeria, Twitter political hashtags serve as focal points for such shifts, encapsulating complex socio-political sentiments in compact linguistic forms (Ibrahim, 2023). As political events unfold, users repurpose hashtags to express new perspectives, thereby driving changes in the semantic networks of online discourse. This study examines the role of Twitter political hashtags in initiating and propagating semantic shifts among Nigerian users. It explores how these hashtags influence the reinterpretation of established lexicon, merge traditional meanings with contemporary connotations, and facilitate collective identity formation (Okafor, 2024). Through the analysis of trending political hashtags and associated tweet corpora, the research aims to document the processes behind semantic evolution in digital contexts, providing insights into the dynamic interplay between language and politics in Nigeria.
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident role of Twitter political hashtags in shaping semantic change, there is limited research focusing on their impact in the Nigerian context. Most studies concentrate on the political mobilization aspects, neglecting the linguistic dimensions of meaning change. This gap limits our understanding of how digital activism influences semantic shifts and constrains the development of comprehensive models that incorporate the nuances of online language evolution (Chukwu, 2023).
